CounterPunch 2009: Why America Needs Labor Unions by David Macary

"The only effective answer to organized greed is organized labor.” ---Thomas Donahue

"Corporations are predictable. They hate paying taxes; they hate paying wages (the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has spent millions lobbying against raising the minimum wage, which, even today, is pitifully low); they hate unions; and they more or less hate the federal government, which they view as an impediment—until they need bailouts or regulations to stifle their competitors...Kevin Phillips, former Republican strategist and speech writer for Richard Nixon, and author of the book, The Politics of Rich and Poor, is no friend of labor. Far from it. But Phillips believes that citizens should be given the opportunity to prosper; and having watched in disbelief and disgust what happened during Ronald Reagan’s two terms as president, he’s afraid that, unless something reverses the trend, the phenomenon known as Middle-Class America will vanish forever. --->Distributism and Labor Unions. "The purpose of the following discussion will be to suggest that Unionism would be strengthened, and its prospects brightened, if it would abandon its traditional belief in the incompatibility and unavoidable antagonism toward business ownership and work, or—to use a traditional phrase—between Capital and Labor...." Note: I agree with that. But since Distributism as an economic philosophy awaits greater understanding among the general population, Labor Unions are, until that time, the only tangible defense workers have vis a vis the corporatocracy. We musn't insist on starting at the finish line. For those unfamiliar with Distributism and how it differs substantially from both socialism and laissez faire capitalism see the Label below this post.

--->Mark and Louise Zwick - Justice in Economics is Not Socialism: The Catholic Worker and Workers: In some people's eyes, the words Worker and Catholic Worker give the Catholic Worker movement a bad name, even today. We were quite surprised when someone we had known for twenty years introduced us to a colleague as people who could explain the good parts of socialism. "What?" we said. "We are not socialists!" "Then why do you call your paper the Houston Catholic Worker...?"

Today Mr. Obama feigns a sudden new "appreciation" for Ronald Reagan as he prepares, it appears, to let the corporatocracy have free 'reign'. We've all heard the rest, i.e., the 'bosses' side (those that remain in this country) and the politicians in their pockets. Heck, even Archie Bunker---who didn't like any Welfare State!--- knew the facts.

Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Regulating the economy solely by centralised planning perverts the basis of social bonds; regulating it solely by the law of the marketplace fails social justice, for there are many human needs which cannot be satisfied by the market. Reasonable regulation of the marketplace and economic initiatives, in keeping with a just hierarchy of values and a view to the common good, is to be commended" (2425)

In real life Carroll O'Connor who played Bunker almost lost his role as Archie for refusing to cross a picket line:

"LOS ANGELES (AP) - Can it be the same without Archie Bunker in "All in the Family"?

"Norman Lear, executive producer, said Wednesday that if Carroll O'Connor does not report for work on Thursday he will be written out of the popular CBS comedy series. O'Connor refuses to cross a picket line of striking electricians at CBS. Taping of the show has been suspended since Aug. 21. Lear said an alternate script without Archie is in rehearsal and will be taped Friday night if O'Connor does not appear.

O'Connor's current absence is unrelated to an earlier walkout over a contract dispute. During that time O'Connor missed two shows (two weeks) and returned July 30 in time to deliver one line at the end of the third show. The shows concerned his disappearance." ---11 Sep 74

What corporate-owned media are not saying: After the global economic crisis, brought on by Wall Street greed, money in this country is being redistributed at taxpayer (bailout) expense---a new kind of socialism is underway but it's being redistributed upwards to Wall Street / the Bankers---meanwhile the Middle Class is foreclosed on all around the country (no bailouts for the victims of reckless or predatory lending). Home values have plummeted in most places in the nation. 401k's are broken promises. Who can doubt that Social Security will come next? We've been sold a bill of (non) goods. Privatization / deregulation has led--- not to research and development and jobs as promised---but to greedy elites exporting business to other nations and continents in search of---not justice but---slave wages...

Once Unions are out of the way (if the corporatocracy has its way) and if collective bargaining is not allowed, just watch, in time everyone's wages will plunge, plunge, plunge and more immigrants will be hired, hired, hired (60+ hrs a week?) at the new low wages.....(and who can blame them for taking the jobs?) The Middle Class will be decimated.

--->Catholic women: instruments of peace. "Nine nations are sitting on approximately 23,000 nuclear bombs and one of the ways to avoid a nuclear holocaust is through the intercession and activism of Catholic women. One of the crazy ideas that men have come up with is that warfare will be the basis of the global economy. Already in the United States an organized mentality is being orchestrated to persuade the American public that global conflict will lead to an inevitable condition called “fighting perpetual wars for perpetual peace.” The time is now for women, especially Catholic women, to challenge this testosterone-charged, ridiculous game plan and to collectively bring this male-dominated planet of ours back to some sense of sanity...

--->The Looting. Separate but unequal: Charts show growing rich-poor gap. "The Great Recession and the slump that followed have triggered a jobs crisis that's been making headlines since before President Obama was in office, and that will likely be with us for years.
