Solitary...

Democracy Now broadcast: "The physical and psychological effects experienced by people held for extended periods in solitary confinement is a topic Dr. Atul Gawande has written extensively about. Yesterday, four prisoners in the supermax Ohio State Penitentiary launched a hunger strike to protest being held for more than 17 years years in solitary confinement.

The alleged WikiLeaks whistleblower, U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning, has also been held in solitary confinement for much of the past seven months. "People experience solitary confinement as even more damaging than physical torture," says Dr. Gawande....See the video report

Andrew J. Bacevich in The Atlantic: The Tyranny of Defense Inc.

In 1961, Dwight Eisenhower famously identified the military-industrial complex, warning that the growing fusion between corporations and the armed forces posed a threat to democracy. Judged 50 years later, Ike’s frightening prophecy actually understates the scope of our modern system—and the dangers of the perpetual march to war it has put us on...Read it all

--->Not War for War's Sake, Not a War Economy...

Eisenhower warned of it (see above). The awful truth is that a "defense" "industry" needs constant enemies and wars to prosper. Are we seriously interested anymore in peace? Or are we now indeed a war economy, as it appears? God have mercy on us if so. John Pilger gives us a snapshot of another truth when he writes,
"...the truth of war is the grotesque. It is trees hanging with the body parts of children. It is people going insane before your eyes. It is terrified soldiers with their trousers full of shit. It is human damage that runs through countless families: civilians and soldiers. That’s war. The coverage of war should be this eyewitness but it should also try to tell us the why. That means journalists not colluding but investigating. One of the most revealing documents released by Wikileaks was a 2,000-page Ministry of Defence document that equated investigative journalists with terrorists. That reflects the lethal stupidity that runs like a current through the war-making industry. It says they are afraid of the truth"---from The War You Don't See

The U.S. spends more on "defense" than all other nations combined, according to Zbigniew Brzezinski (click). Orwell warned of a world where war is called 'peace'. I'm no friend of radical Islam. Back in the old TCR days, we joined others in a call (click) for a response to the WTC attacks. But we soon had to say enough is enough, especially as a new and unjust front was opened in Iraq; there had been enough payback for September 11, 2001. Occupations, it was clear, would only provoke more and more blowback. What then about now, so many years later? We missed the objective (get bin Laden and accomplices) and have killed and maimed far more than 3,000 human beings according to human rights agencies, most recently confirmed again in the government's own documents according to the recently released Wikileaks war cables, as reported by some of the world's most prominent publications. Enough is enough, so many persons and nations across the world are saying, if we have not become a war economy, where war is prosecuted for its own sake in the interests of empire.
