Distorting Benedict's Words and Intentions Regarding Creation?

Hugh Owen is the Director of The Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation. In an email this morning Mr. Owen took exception to media interpretations of Pope Benedict's recent remarks on creation in which the Holy Father clashed with those who affirm against reason and evidence that the universe could have come about by "chance". Owen writes,

"The press totally distorted the Holy Father's remarks (click). I read the text of his homily in Italian at the link below. He doesn't even mention the Big Bang or the age of the universe! (Click for distorting media account) Nothing in this homily is in any way opposed to the traditional doctrine of creation. We must really be on our guard against these media manipulators."

"The universe is not the result of chance, as some would like to make us believe. In contemplating it, we are asked to interpret in it something profound; the wisdom of the Creator, the inexhaustible creativity of God, his infinite love for us.

"We must not let our minds be limited by theories that always go only so far and that — at a close look — are far from competing with faith but do not succeed in explaining the ultimate meaning of reality. We cannot but perceive in the beauty of the world, its mystery, its greatness and its rationality, the eternal rationality; nor can we dispense with its guidance to the one God, Creator of Heaven and of earth."---Benedict XVI, Jan 7, 2011, emphasis added

The Kolbe Center seeks to educate the public, particularly within the Catholic Church, in the truth of creation as revealed in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and as confirmed by the findings of modern science. With the help of experts in the fields of theology, philosophy, and natural science, the Kolbe Center also seeks to show the superiority of special creation over all forms of molecules-to-man evolution as an explanation of the origins of man and the universe. Hugh Owen's father, interestingly, was Sir David Owen, Secretary General of International Planned Parenthood, who died in 1970.

1.9.2011: The only efficacious protest we have against an immoral show of injustice here and / or aggression around the world by our own government is non-violent moral force and moral persuasion. Though otherwise disparate in belief systems, Thoreau, Tolstoy, Gandhi, King and others all showed against great odds the practical efficacy of the non-violence of the Sermon on the Mount against all forms of cruelty and injustice.

It would appear that the suspect in the above tragic case was as insane as (click) our own society and foreign policy has become around the world. Catholic teaching reminds us that only if a nation or community is attacked directly in a veritable act of war [Iraq did not fit that bill] does it have a right to defend itself in other ways, using [only] sufficient force to repel the attack; there is no such thing as license for perpetual war once the aggressor has been repelled [thus the question, when is enough, enough in Afghanistan---or are other motives at play?].

Today the US by selling arms and weapons technology abroad has not made the world more secure but far more unstable. And so conflict-breeding paranoia increases daily. Political positions about personal ownership of guns, however, are hardly convincing despite the political rhetoric. Mexico, for example, has a complete ban on guns and is one of the most violent nations on earth (click), with politicians and police and many innocent civilians regularly kidnapped and / or killed, while Switzerland allows all homes to maintain serious assault rifles and there is comparatively little violence. Still, moral persuasion and non-violent demonstrations are the highest ordinary form of protest.

Letter from Thomas Merton to Jim Forest, August 27, 1962: "The basic problem is not political, it is a-political and human. One of the most important things to do is to keep cutting deliberately through political lines and barriers and emphasizing the fact that these are largely fabrications and that there is another dimension, a genuine reality, totally opposed to the fictions of politics: the human dimension which politics pretend to arrogate entirely to themselves. This is the necessary first step along the long way toward the perhaps impossible task of purifying, humanizing and somehow illuminating politics themselves."

  3. Scotju, no I just received it in my email box from another. But you may contact the Kolbe Center and make a request I should think. Give it a shot.

  4. Steve, Kolbe sent me an e-mail with the true translation. As you mentioned in your post, there's no big bang mentioned in the homily. You just can't trust the MSM to get anything about the Church right.

  5. Sadly, yes, it would appear that way. When it comes to the Church the media has taken on the role of news shaper than news conveyor / courier.
