Dismissing Communism's Crimes
by George Jonas, National Post, Toronto, Monday, September 27, 1999
...Stalin and Mao killed tens of millions of people. But no one seems to care much.
I'm not proposing to review Mr. Death here, except to note that I agree with Roger Ebert, who wrote in a recent review that "among documentaries about the Holocaust, this one is invaluable, because instead of simply repeating familiar facts, it demonstrates the very process of self-deception that made the Holocaust possible..."
What I'd like to address, however, is a related subject in self-deception.
The Nazi Holocaust claimed about six million Jewish victims. This is the number of peasants Stalin starved to death in Ukraine alone, just for a warm-up...Read it all
Note: Every genocidal maniac in Hell today had his 'patriotic' 'reasons' for doing what he did---from Hitler to Stalin to Mao, to the perpetrators of the Armenian and Rwandan genocides and far beyond, even to those horrors that are still largely hidden, maybe even closer to home. And the rationalizations are all criminal rubbish, crimes against God and humanity. No matter what the crimes of some of the victims, real or imagined, genocide is the ultimate political crime; and to prevent its ever happening again everyone must own up. No genocide can be allowed to remain hidden or played down.
And short of genocide, there are---except in movie propaganda---few of 'us' who have been entirely blameless when it comes to creating the conditions which make hatred and wars, large or 'small,' easier to erupt. Owning up to this also is serious business, especially today in a fearful nuclear world.
Solzhenitsyn: "The communist regime in the East could stand and grow due to the enthusiastic support from an enormous number of Western intellectuals who felt a kinship and refused to see communism's crimes. When they no longer could do so, they tried to justify them. In our Eastern countries, communism has suffered a complete ideological defeat; it is zero and less than zero. But Western intellectuals still look at it with interest and with empathy..." Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Harvard, 1978
--->Bad behavior / unjust wars lead to fears of Blowback (see label below this post), the kind the attorney general of the US warns about... But very prominent peace activists and analysts (click) have been warning again and again that the only sure way to prevent or lessen crimes of blowback is for us to behave better around the world, making justice and fairness more than slogans in the interests of empire and foreign occupations. To ignore such advice is to only to invite more unnecessary suffering.

--->Hugo Chavez power grab succeeds...."permit him to run for re-election indefinitely." I don't often agree with Michelle Malkin, but she was surely correct when deploring this kind of dangerous tyranny which makes the Left go all limp...
--->Death Panels, the Real Thing. Everybody is talking about strapped state budgets and yet few talk about the costs of our perpetual wars and hubristic Brave New World technological projects subsidized by the government. So...who are said will have to suffer?
Biting the austerity bullet is for the Middle Class and poor only. Thomas Malthus had another name for IT---and you should look it up if you are unfamiliar with Malthus.
WBUR: "States all around the country are scrambling to deal with gaping holes in their budgets. There are big obligations and not enough money. Many are looking hard at their Medicaid commitments.
"Arizona has acted. Its governor, Jan Brewer, and state legislature, have cut off procedures that supporters say save lives. Critics now charge: “death panel." Take your damaged heart and go. Arizona says, "What should we do?" Other states have other problems: pulling the teeth of the poor instead of fixing them; weighing more cuts. We look at the Arizona story, and rationing health care by budget cut."....Hear the program from WBUR, Boston, PBS... (judge for yourself whether this broadcast gets or ignores the war-economy elephant in the room)

Note: Surely it is right for any nation to require a coherent and reasonable immigration policy. But when we find the "stranger" (Mt 25) among us, we can hardly turn our backs on his needs. They come often because our multinational corporations have shut down their means of making a living at home.
