Mr. Obama Destroying His Own Political Base: Carrying on Bush Legacy

DN's Amy Goodman speaks with British Pakistani political commentator, writer, activist and editor of the New Left Review, Tariq Ali. He is the author of numerous books; his latest is The Obama Syndrome: Surrender at Home, War Abroad.

It is a remarkable statistic Goodman relates: that some 20,000 (!) British veterans of the Iraq and Afghan wars are in prisons or otherwise in trouble with the law for anti-social behavior.

Meanwhile Ali gives a dismal assessment of the ongoing suffering of the people in Pakistan after the floods, even as the US spends billions on the wars in the region, which Ali calls "obscene" ...See it here

--->UK: Sex, violence, and drugs land ex-servicemen behind bars. An estimated 20,000 veterans are now in prison, on probation or on parole... "Comparisons with the general prison population reveal that ex-soldiers are twice as likely to be jailed for sex offences. The Government study estimates that 3.5 per cent, nearly 3,000 inmates, of the total prison population are military veterans, many of whom served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now represent the largest single occupational group held behind bars in England and Wales."

--->Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala has called for the United States to pull its troops out of Afghanistan, calling the situation there “horrendous.”

--->Never Ending Gory: Bob Woodward's new book "portrays Obama and the White House as barraged by warnings about the threat of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil and confronted with the difficulty in preventing them. During an interview with Woodward in July, the president said, "We can absorb a terrorist attack. We'll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever . . . we absorbed it and we are stronger...

"Obama has kept in place or expanded 14 intelligence orders, known as findings, issued by his predecessor, George W. Bush. The orders provide the legal basis for the CIA's worldwide covert operations...Woodward quotes Petraeus as saying, "You have to recognize also that I don't think you win this war. I think you keep fighting. It's a little bit like Iraq, actually. . . . Yes, there has been enormous progress in Iraq. But there are still horrific attacks in Iraq, and you have to stay vigilant. You have to stay after it. This is the kind of fight we're in for the rest of our lives and probably our kids' lives..."

Note: Such a scenario is jarring; it supersedes the length of all the horrific wars of the 20th century. Is Bedrock really that dangerous or do we have other interests there as many believe? One can only speculate. But if another major terrorist attack were to occur in the US I think the level of distrust is so high in this country that many American's, on both the Left and the Right, would suspect the proponents of war here more than the war-traumatized residents Taliban in Afghanistan or elsewhere. Clearly Mr. Obama needs to return to justice and so build elementary goodwill with the world. If the threat were really so grave and we were serious about preventing domestic terrorism, wouldn't we do what all nations throughout history did, viz., secure our borders? Instead we let almost anybody and everyone in. It undermines all credibility relative to domestic terrorist concerns. Meanwhile, "Rahm [Emmanuel] cheers drone attacks: 'Who did we get today?'...” We can do better. Let's.

--->Revisited from 2003, Michael Lind: How Neoconservatives Conquered Washington – and Launched a War...Most of these "experts" never served in the military. But their headquarters is now the civilian defense secretary's office, where these Republican political appointees are despised and distrusted by the largely Republican career soldiers. Most neoconservative defense intellectuals have their roots on the left, not the right...
